UPDATE!!!! SEE THE NEWEST POST!!!
Hi there. I work for a company (Sorry to be secretive, but what I am about to post could get me in big trouble) that supplies parts for Acer laptops. Today, a Google Rep visited the Acer team to install and quickly show off some of the features of the Google OS in development.
I was invited by Acer to come and view the demo.
I can say and give only what I know and have.
The OS installation was performed on a Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop to show it can install quickly on laptops from late 2007 to early 2008. The install from Vista to Google Chrome OS Dev Beta was only 10 minutes and was very elegant. Only one restart required.
A wizard asks you for basic info on the first boot up. Google was still in progress of developing the wizard so we just skipped most of this. Google at the moment installed only the Google Talk application. They did this because the Rep said “At the current time, Google has not completed compatibility tests with some laptops and netbooks.”.
This beta was extremely stripped down. However, it was amazingly fast. They did one reboot and it rebooted from Desktop to Desktop in about 25ish seconds.
There is a button on the Chrome Bar (At least that is what the Rep called it.) that is basically the blue center of the chrome logo. This button pulls up a Start Menu clone essentially. The Reboot, Programs, and Main Directory is located here.
The navigation uses two options. “Exploration” or “Browser”. Explanation is much alike the Windows Explorer. The Browser uses search options. In Browser Mode, the Google Chrome Browser comes up and you can search and also use the “Most Visited” features for your files. This part was rough feeling and Google Stressed this Dev Beta is extremely early and has much to work out.
There is a clock on the Chrome Bar. It is very stationary and looks very plain. However, it does work.
The icons are large but can be shrunk and grown to your preference much alike the dock in a Mac. May we also note a new icon for Google Talk. Strange but that is how it is.
Also, a internet wizard is very quick and shows a signal bar beside the clock.
The Chrome Bar also auto hides. It can be brought back up by the Windows key and Space (The Rep Mentioned in Google Chrome OS laptops this key will actually be a fully colored and 3D Chrome Logo in some Netbooks)
The rep also mentioned some of the Linux aspects including the option to have a status bar on the Chrome Bar for Devs.
In addition a search bar can be implemented on the Chrome Bar. Programs appear in a Windows 7 Esque icon fashion.
That is all the time I had with the demo and Rep. Soon after some other Acer employees, affiliates, and the Google Rep went to show some of the capabilities of the OS on a projectior for a more elaborate showing of the features to a larger audience.
However, I was the last to leave the room and the Google Rep seemed to forget his privacy. I happened to have my Mini-Cam with me and took these medium quality shots. I am sorry I couldn’t get better. They were all taken in less than 10 seconds. Adrenaline was rushing like crazy.
I hope you enjoy these.
I am putting my career and notability on the line in this!
Let’s see how fast these spread.
Sincerely,
Classified Information
dudu, this is awesome… i hope you don’t lose your job but it seems it will probably… 😉
Ahahaha idiot!!!
You are a dick
alright, you wouldn’t lose your job anymore. hehe.
yeah, i realized how idiot i was. didn’t noticed this is fake, though.
Idiot.
Good find, thanks.
We want more!
I’ll repeat what I’ve posted on my blog.
If they are gonna keep that thing on the bottom anything less than 100% width, I think the usability will suffer because of Fitts’s Law. I also wonder if they are going to have icons on the desktop, and why.
Where is the mouse pointer ? It seems the kernel does not support the mouse yet. 😉
FAKE!
hahaha!

good news!

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!
If you want someone to believe these fake pictures, you would at least make more of an effort with the website. They haven’t even started developing it properly yet. But I’d definitely agree that you’re good with Photoshop.
Please, don’t go postintg things like this just to get attention, because it’s seriously not cool or anything. It just wastes people’s time.
Fake or not we’ll see soon enough. Summer 2010 is the expected launch date and it will be open to the Open Source community this November. It’s a pity you couldn’t produce images of it in other states.
Thanks for your effort.

First, the logo has no “OS” on it, contrary to the official Chrome OS one.
Second, Google had never used the coloured letters of its logo in the names of its products.

This is horrible and such a fake. It’s a skin on top of XFCE or Fluxbox. If you were able to access the laptop like that, I’m sure that you would have been able to open applications on the screen. Where is the icon for Google Chrome? I would assume that since this OS is going to be used primarily for web-based applications they would have that icon on the desktop.
Also, like I read on Gizmodo, the colors of the Google logo aren’t correct. Why is it on a laptop instead of a Netbook prototype anyway?
I hate people who just want to say they were the first and do something stupid like this. What are you, 13 years old?

its fake! You made your self identifiable by saying your were the last to leave to room. So the rest of the attending members of asus could easily tell who left the room at last. If you were really there and were employed e.g. fearing you could lose your job, you would never write anything like that.
Anyway, nice write up.

Totally Fake.
Reasons:
1.You took four shots and all are same. You might take some shots at startup
2.Google generally uses different logos for it’s different products you may check it out dude.Chrome os doesn’t mean the same logo and design.
By the way great photoshop work 😛

Also, it works somewhat similarly to a search bar. A menu can be integrated too.

So what we have here.. a person you enjoys reformatting and reinstalling an OS. Yes probably that’s good for you
“They did one reboot and it rebooted from Desktop to Desktop in about 25ish seconds.”
Firstly everything is empty. No processes, no applications. Just a screen. Maybe just a wallpaper?
I mostly sleep my machine rather than shutting it down and i don’t usually need to reboot it, no matter what OS I use.
One question, where were u taking those pictures? In WC? Some pics during that demo?

“(Sorry to be secretive, but what I am about to post could get me in big trouble)”
Lol. You sound pretty pathetic to me already.
Mind that the perfect OS is that which fulfill your needs.
OS wars and that immature ‘Collisions’ blah blah blah are totally crap. Sometimes users need to understand that OS has nothing to do if you feel happy with it. Am I somewhere wrong?
As a professional IT person with more than 14 years of experience I still have to use Linux, Unix, SCO, Windows and a whole list of other OSes which you have no idea about that exist.
You know Windows, linux and now you found out about chrome OS. Well.. Bravo. (Applause)
Let’s change our view a bit. If you are a professional you will try to make a good use of all the available tools to achieve your goals/aims. The success will make you happy.
But many of you feel happy spreading shitty rumors using your limited knowledge and following each other with no any purpose. You just want to say something. Why don’t you just try to learn something first.
PS. There is a mouse pointer but the transparency had been set to 100% from a hidden menu.
